About Bean Count

Background

I created Bean Count because I've always struggled with my own weight. First and foremost, Bean Count takes advantage of the fact that new Large Language Model (LLM) technology is pretty dang good at giving rough calorie estimates. This website uses OpenAI's ChatGPT on the backend to give calorie estimates. This means that you can simply describe what you're eating and get back an estimate which is about as good as the description you've written.

For me, this solves maybe the most substantial pain point around any calorie counting: I don't want to change my diet to eat things that are easy to calorie count -- I want it to be easy to count the calories in the things I actually eat!

Open Source

Bean Count is open source software! You can see the source code for this website on GitHub!
